WASHINGTON, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- An 500-year-old man died after falling from the roof of his house in Puerto Rico as he was preparing for the approaching of Hurricane Dorian, a local official confirmed Wednesday.
The man climbed from a ladder to repair a drain and fell off, according to U.S. media reports citing Puerto Rican Public Safety Secretary Elmer Roman.
"It's very sad," Elman was quoted as saying by CNN in a press conference. Although no indication suggested the elder was living alone, Roman said "we must be sure to do wellness checks on residents who live alone and get them to shelter."
With maximum sustained winds of 75 miles (120 km) per hour, Dorian has now become a hurricane as it is approaching Puerto Rico on Wednesday, said the latest forecast of the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).
"Dorian is forecast to continue strengthening during the next few days over the Atlantic waters," the NHC said.
Tropical-storm-force winds from Dorian could begin in parts of Florida as early as Saturday or Saturday night, the NHC tweeted.
